EXCERPT

Coming home when Rissa was already a few months old made me want to prove I could take care of her. Fortunately, for the most part, she was a pretty easy baby. I was feeling pretty confident. This fatherhood thing wasn’t as hard as everybody made it out to be. Oh little did I know.
A few nights after I got home from deployment, we went out to dinner with our moms before they flew home. We’d been at the restaurant close to an hour when Rissa started to get fussy.  She didn’t want a bottle or a pacifier. None of the positions I tried were working. You reached for her, but I said, “Just wait, I gotta learn.” A minute or two later she quieted down. I’d found what worked, bouncing on my knee, or so I thought. Feeling a bit smug, I told you, “See, I got this.” You gave a small nod and smiled like you knew something I didn’t know. If I’d been a smart man, I would have heeded the warning from the experienced parent.
It wasn’t long before you glanced down and grinned like the cat who ate the canary. My chair was angled away from the table so I had room for Rissa on my lap. As you nodded your head toward me and smirked, you asked, “Did you have an accident?’
I followed your gaze and looked down at my lap to find a big wet spot seeping out from under Rissa. “She peed on me!”
“Ugh, babe, I don’t think that’s pee.”
“Oh, nasty!” I tried to hand Rissa to you, but you were having none of it.
You shook your head, held your hands up, and said, “Remember—you got this. So get to getting.”
Desperate, I looked to our moms for help, but I instantly knew they were on Team Mom and I was on my own. By this point, Rissa had started crying at full volume. After about five minutes of watching me struggle to get her out of the poop infested clothes and diaper, you took pity on me, or Rissa at least, and started changing her. After bending her in half, which I didn’t know was possible, you had a fresh diaper on her before I blinked. To this day, I don’t know how you changed diapers that quickly. Although, I’m pretty sure most of the liquid poop was on my lap, so there wasn’t much for you to have to clean.
The front of my pants were covered in baby shit. I used every napkin we had at the table, then asked the waiter for more and another glass of water. By the time I was done scrubbing my pants, I looked like I’d pissed myself. The three of you thought it was hilarious that I had to walk out of the restaurant holding the diaper bag in front of me. Y’all had quite the time yucking it up at my expense.
I learned a valuable lesson; it’s okay to ask for help as a parent, and nobody has all of the answers when it comes to kids. But I’ll admit to some satisfaction when Xavier crapped all over you when he was a couple of weeks old. While I got it in my lap, he got you from head to waist. I also learned he who laughs last, laughs loudest.

I couldn’t believe that nobody helped him. My mom was a sucker for a crying baby, and his mom was a sweetheart. I couldn’t picture either of them letting Jason struggle or Rissa cry while she was covered in poop. This story needed to be verified.
The phone rang a couple of times before Marlene picked up. “Hello.”
“Hey, Marlene.”
“Hey, sweetie. What are y’all up to?”
“I just finished opening one of the memories.”
“Oh, really, are you enjoying them?”
“Yeah, they’re great. This one was one of Jason’s. He told the story about Rissa pooping on him in a restaurant—”
“Oh, good grief,” she laughed, “he’s never gonna let that go—”
“It really happened? And he changed her at the table?”
“Oh the naiveté of the new parent.” Okay, no faulting her logic there, but seriously, why would you change a baby’s diaper where you were eating? Ewww “The restaurant was this little hole in the wall Mexican place. I have no idea how it wasn’t shut down by the health department. We would have probably needed a tetanus shot if we’d gone to the bathroom there. The spot on his pants wasn’t even that bad. If he’d of just waited until we got back to the house to clean his pants nobody would have even noticed.
“You’d would’ve thought he was the first parent to ever get crapped on by a baby. When we got to the car to go home, he pulled off his shorts & put them in a plastic bag from the trunk. Then he took a forty-five minute shower we got to y’all’s townhouse. Who would have thought that a grown man would be bested by one poopy diaper?”

Excerpt:

“I brought you something,” he says, pushing himself back with his legs, allowing himself room to dig into his jean pocket. After a moment he pulls out what appears to be a black string and dangles it between his thumb and forefinger. Three silver squares catch the remaining sunlight and I suck in a hasty breath, snatching it from him. Cradling it in my hands I look down at that all too familiar bracelet.

I revel in amazement. I completely forgot about this bracelet—the one that Parker gave me when I was six, during the first time episode of anxiety and mutism. I’d just started school and had completely shut down. He gave it to me in the hope that it would give me the strength I needed. He even took the time to pick out the sterling silver squares with the letters K, T and P on them.

“I thought maybe if you knew that Tommy and I were always with you then you might feel a little stronger and you might start talking again,” he says as he ties the string around my wrist.

I smile as he fumbles with the strings. “Dad made me change a lot of oil so that I could buy this for you, Katie. I hope you like it.”

I want to tell him I love it but I can’t muster the strength, even though he’s tried to give me all he can. Instead, I thank him the only way I know how. Once he’s finished tying it, I throw my arms around him and hold on tight.

I vowed that day to never let him go. But I had, and my world went to shit because of it. He takes the bracelet from my hand and ties it around my wrist while I stare at him, completely dumbfounded. “When I got the call, I dug around for it,” he explains. My face flushes with embarrassment as I remember throwing it in his face not so long ago. “I thought maybe you could use a little strength today.”

ELEVATOR PITCH

When Karen Magill woke to find herself partially paralyzed on one side of her body, she began a journey filled with twists and turns. From the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis to becoming an award-winning novelist, On The Right Side shows that a crisis can be a blessing.

AUTHOR BIO

Forced to leave the workforce in 2000 by the onslaught of MS, Karen saw this as an opportunity to explore her lifelong desire to write. In February of 2014, Karen independently published an inspiring story of her journey so far with MS entitled On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success.
Ms. Magill believes that anything is possible and when she writes fiction, she leans towards the paranormal. She writes about extrasensory powers as if they are commonplace because, in her mind, we are all capable of those gifts.
To date, Ms. Magill is the author of four published paranormal novels, including the award winning The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story.
Karen lives in an eclectic area of Vancouver Canada and draws inspiration from the history and stories around her.

EXCERPT

Introduction

I started to keep a journal after I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I did that for the first couple of years just so I would remember what that time in my life was like. And so that, maybe, one day I would write a book on it.  Well, the day to write that book is here.

I tried to write this book years ago but the time wasn’t right. Perhaps I didn’t feel I had accomplished enough to make my story worth reading. Or maybe it was because the emotions I recalled when reading and remembering were just too painful to relive. I know that as I write this book thirteen years after my major MS attack, I find tears near the surface and I have to take breaks from writing so that I don’t break down completely. The story you are about to read comes from my MS journal, my regular journal and my memory.

My philosophy is that as long as we aren’t six feet under and are on the right side of the ground, there is hope. We can make positive changes in our life, no matter where we are right now and what challenges face us.  On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success is not a book to tell you how to live your life. Deep down, you know how to do that, you have the strength to survive and flourish. I am going to give you my opinion on life events and tell you how I managed to get where I am today.  Maybe it will help you. Maybe it won’t. At the least, this could be an entertaining story for you.

This book is a blend of what I went through – and am still going through – how I deal with it and my views on matters that affect our society today. I am not an expert, just a person who is going through a difficult time and is learning as I go. Events unfold the way I remember them and some of the names have been changed.

So grab a cuppa of whatever you like, sit back and read on. Welcome to my journey.

Mama Pearl tiptoed slowly toward the old cars, her steps hesitant but determined. The first few cars she looked into were empty. She continued toward the back when a bad odor filled her nose. With her face twisted up, Mama Pearl took deep breaths as she continued walking. A scream lodged in her throat as she approached the last car. “Oh, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl whispered in shock. Two pieces of sticks, resembling legs, were hanging out the opened back door. Her heart slamming against her chest, Mama Pearl walked closer and saw the scrawny, young girl shaking uncontrollably in the backseat. She smelled like rotten garbage. Tears filled Mama Pearl’s eyes. Mama Pearl quickly rested the box in her hand on top of the car and leaned inside to look at the young girl. Suddenly, two pair of red, haunted eyes stared up at her, piercing her soul. “Help me,” the weak voice begged a little above a whisper. Mama Pearl gasped loudly and pulled her head out of the car. She cushioned her weak body against the car as her jelly feet felt as if they were about to crumble. “Lord, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl muttered. “Dear Lord, dear Lord.” Mama Pearl was not a stranger to the homeless people scattered all over Kingston. She was a long-standing viewer of the poverty that hit so many Jamaicans and only seemed to get worse, day by day. Her heart bled as she turned and stared at the sick child again. She looked as if she was a minute away from death’s door. Tiny rambled some gibberish and moaned in agony as sharp needles pricked her all over her ice-cold body. Her teeth chattered, and her eyes rolled around listlessly in her head.
